Monday, 08 July 1889     Death of Simon Shepard

    Simon Shepard, an aged, and respected citizen, died yesterday at 10:30 a.m. of disease of the liver. He was born in Sussex county, New Jersey, April 16th, 1818, having passed thus the threescore and ten allotted to man. At Bristol, N. Y., Sept. 12, 1843 he was married to Roxanna Crowell, who now survives him. In 1844 the couple went to Texas, the seat at that time of the Mexican trouble, but in March 1846 they came to Piqua. The deceased had learned the Cooper's trade when a youth, and Piqua at the period of his arrival was noted for this industry. He became a member of the Greene Street M. E. Church in 1851. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Forest Hill Cemetery for six years and Superintendent in 1880-83. The funeral will take place from his late residence near the Covington road, one mile west of town, Wednesday afternoon at 4 p. m. Rev. E. T. Wells, officiating.
