Piqua Daily Call
Sept. 8, 1892
Henry Smithman was born in Prussia, April 9, 1818. In his youth he emigrated to
the United States and settled in Western Pennsylvania where in 1840 he was
married to Agnes Wagner, who survives him and is with us today. In 1865 he
retired from active business, that of farming, and with a family of nine
children emigrated to Ohio, and had lived in Piqua since 1866. Of his family of
eleven children seven are living; two residing in the State of Kansas, one in
Pennsylvania, and four in Ohio.
In the early part of the present year Mr. Smithman suffered from a severe attack
of La Grippe which left him in an enfeebled condition and on Sunday September
4th, after an illness of ten days, he expired peacefully and without pain, at
the age of 78 years, 4 months and 25 days. Mr. Smithman in early life
connected himself with the Lutheran church, and during the greater part of his
life was an active member of the same. The funeral services were held by
Rev. S. S. Newhouse, Sept. 7, 1892 and the remains interred in Forest Hill
Cemetery.
