"Committal Service is Held Wednesday"
A committal service was held this afternoon at Forest Hill cemetery where the
Hon. Burr J. Brotherton, 87 years of age, a former Common Pleas judge of Van
Wert county, was laid to rest beside members of his family, the funeral having
been held at 1:30 o'clock in the First Presbyterian church, Delphos. He died at
5:15 o'clock Monday morning at his home in Delphos. Judge Brotherton was a
native of Piqua and member of an old pioneer family of this vicinity. He was
born in this city July 24, 1849, in the Brotherton homestead at 412 Caldwell
street where a sister still resides. His early education was acquired in the
Piqua public schools but he practiced law in Delphos for many years, retiring
from active practice only a year and a half ago. Besides being a distinguished
member of the Ohio bar, he served for two terms as State Commissioner of
Soldiers Claims under Governor Harmon. He was a veteran of the Civil War, 1st
Ohio Cavalry. He leaves two daughters, the Misses Mary and Jane
Brotherton, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Ludlow and Miss Susan Brotherton
of this city, and a grandniece, Miss Mary Rebecca Upton, also of Piqua.
