'Spike' Iddings dies

GREENVILLE-- Howard "Spike" Iddings, long time Greenville businessman and owner of race cars, died Monday night in a two-car crash at Indianapolis.

Iddings, 65, was enroute home from the annual Old Timers Club barbecue at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when his car was struck from behind on the Interstate 70 loop. His car then bounced off a guardrail, veered across two lanes of traffic and hit a signpost.

Indiana State troopers said the driver of the other car, John F. Orkman, 21, of Indianapolis, was charged with driving (paragraph is cut off)

Iddings, who formerly owned the Iddings Glass Co., co-owned race cars along with his brother, John, from the late 1930's to 1974. Their cars ran in two 500 mile races, finishing seventh in 1948 with Lee Wallard driving.

Iddings car, prepared by Daytonian Henry Meyer, campaigned on the United States Auto Club Sprint car circuit for many years. Their drivers included: Elbert Brooker, Tony Bettenhaursen, Johnny Shackleford, Bob Scott, Bob Veith, Bill Mackey, Bob Swelkert, Bobby Marshman, Don Branson, Allen Crowe and Sonny Ates.
