Casstown Man Marched With Sherman To Sea-
Funeral Today
James E. Jones, last surviving Civil war veteran in Miami county, died at 6:15 a. m., Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dan Hartman, Casstown, with whom he had made his home for the last 30 years. Death was attributed to infirmities that became apparent during the past week.
Had Mr. Jones lived until March 1, he would have observed his 95th birthday anniversary.
Mr. Jones was born at Jamestown, O., but had spent the major part of his life in Miami county. He was a retired farmer and was widely known throughout this territory.
Marched with Sherman
He was a member of the 74th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, having served for 18 months under the command of General Sherman. His active service included Sherman's famous march to the sea. His army life began when he was 15 years old, when he ran away from home to join the Union army. His two brothers, both of whom were in service, were home on leave, and when they returned, the lad accompanied them.
Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Hartman, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Beaty, 78, of West Carrollton. His wife, the former Viola Robinson of Alcony, whom he married in 1887, died in 1895. A son and a daughter also preceded him in death.
In addition to the daughter and sister, Mr. Jones is survived by four granddaughters, Mrs. Merle Miller, Mrs. Robert Bewley and Ruthanne Hartman of Casstown and Mrs. Kenneth Bookwalter of Troy, and one great-granddaughter, Michele Miller, of Casstown.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock p. m. Thursday at the Hartman home in Casstown, with Rev. Lester Sehlechty of Troy officiating. Burial will be in Newson chapel cemetery in Champaign county.
