Ellis Chandler Sproat was born in Cecil County, Maryland, April 9, 1860. At the age of 19 years he came to Ohio where he learned and worked at the carpenter trade near to the town of Webster. Soon he united with the Methodist church of that place upon profession of faith in Christ and began a definite Christian Life. It was at Webster also that he met and loved Eleanor Rebecca Kinney and on Christmas Day 1883 the two were married. To this union were born six children as follows; Homer Sproat of Covington, Ohio; Mrs. Myrtle Alexander also of Covington, Clyde Sproat of Greenville, Ohio, Ralph Sproat of Covington,, Mrs. Marie Penney of Vandalia, Ohio, and Ida Sproat who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Sproat lived on a farm, rearing their family near Webster, until in 1918 they moved to Covington and since that time Mr. Sproat has been continuously engaged at the so called Shuman elevator. These long years of service speak much as to his trustworthiness and efficiency. Mr. Sproat united with the Masonic Lodge of Versailles, Ohio and has continued his affiliation with the organization through the years, but upon moving to Covington he transferred his church membership to the Presbyterian body of this place. Last Monday in the pursuance of his regular duties he went to prepare a railroad car for the shipment of a new load of grain. Sometime after eleven o'clock he suffered a paralytic stroke. As soon as he was found he was placed in the Covington hospital where all that human love and skill could offer were freely given. Hope for his recovery which at first was slight, grew fainter and Saturday morning, March 19, at 4:30 A.M. he slept away and we are saying that his earth life was 71 years, 11 months, and 10 days. The partner of nearly 50 years must finish the journey alone. The sons and daughters are deprived of a loving counselor. these together with one sister Mary Grant of Wilmington, Delaware; one half brother, Bert Gallagher; 10 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends mourn because they will see him no more on earth. We believe he has gone to be in that "prepared place".
