John S. Nehr was born near West Charleston, Ohio, June 4, 1856, and died at his home near Painter Creek, Darke County, Ohio, November 5, 1897, of tiedoloureux. At nineteen years of age Mr. Nehr united with the German Baptist Church, and lived a consistent and devoted life until death. In 1884 he was married to Sarah M. Shellabarger. After a few years they moved to Covington and in 1889 to Painter Creek. For the past five years the deceased filled the office of deacon and for seven successive years he was Sabbath School superintendent, having charge of two large schools a portion of this time. He was very active and zealous in all his undertakings, whether in domestic affairs of Christian work. In the latter he was always ready to perform any duty. In his attendance at Sabbath School and church he was always regular, prompt and devoted, having a cheering word for all he met. The funeral took place on Sunday, November 7, services being held in the large church of Pittsburg at the same hour and place he was expected to superintend the Sabbath School. Rev. David Hollinger, of North Manchester, Ind. Assisted by Rev. Tobias Kreider and Rev. Jesse Stutsman, conducted the services from Revelations 21:1-7. Though the weather was rainy, over a thousand people attended the funeral, among whom were many of the Sabbath School pupils who, with sad hearts and deep regret, took their last view of the lifeless form and familiar countenance of the one who had so faithfully and earnestly led and encouraged them in the way they should go to reach the beautiful home beyond. Interment was in the Newcomer Cemetery. The deceased leaves a devoted companion and three of this deceased brother's children, whom he adopted some years ago, and a large host of friends to mourn his loss.
