John Jacob Baumgardner
John Jacob Baumgardner was born in Laramie Township, Shelby Co., O., on April 7, 1861 and was reared as the foster son of Edward and Hannah Baumgardner who resided on a farm in Shelby County. Here he grew to manhood and on Nov. 11, 1883 he was united in marriage with Mary Elizabeth Mader with whom he lived more than 45 years of his life, until this companion was called in death on Jan. 12, 1929. To this union three children were born; Walter E. of Sidney, Mrs. Alice Christian of Yorkshire, and Mrs. Clara Wehneman of near Covington. In 1885 Mr. Baumgardner along with his wife moved to Nebraska where they resided about 17 years. Returning to Ohio in 1902, they again took up their residence on a farm in Shelby County until 1917 when he retired and moved to Sidney. In November of 1930 he again married to Mrs. Mary Witwer after which time he resided in Bradford and Covington. Of the immediate family there lives to mourn his earthly departure the widow and three children, 8 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, also a large number of more distant relatives and friends. The deceased had been a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Sidney for a number of years. Since residing in Bradford and Covington he was a rather regular attendant at the services of St. John's Lutheran Church, Covington. Mr. Baumgardner had always enjoyed fairly good health until last February when he was stricken with paralysis, since which time he gradually became weaker until in the early hours of last Friday morning, Aug. 23, 1935 when his spirit was called by his Heavenly Father. His age was 74 years, 4 months and 16 days.
