Jerry Gallagher
Three Year Old Victim Dies In Hospital Following Tragic Accident Sunday In Pleasant Hill. Rites Tuesday Afternoon
Little Jerry Gallagher, Three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gallagher was fatally injured Sunday noon in an unavoidable accident when he dashed into the street before his home in Pleasant Hill, and was struck by a car driven by Carrol (Bus) Westfall, also of that village. A playmate, Mary Margaret Jessup was crossing the street in front of the Gallagher home on North Main Street and it is thought that Jerry was attempting to catch up with her. As he dashed from the side-walk he ran directly into the bumper of the Westfall car. In his relation of the accident, Westfall stated that he was driving south at a speed of about 25 miles per hour when the Jessup child came into the street, he immediately turned his car to keep from striking her. At the same instant little Jerry ran into his bumper, a few feet from the scene another car belonging to Walter Westfall was parked by the curb, The Carrol Westfall car, bearing little Jerry on the bumper crashed into the parked machine, throwing the child into the air. Both arms and both legs of the child were broken and he was also injured at the base of the skull. After administering first aid at his office, Dr. G.A. Woodhouse ordered the child removed to the Piqua hospital where he died a few hours after the accident. Mr. Gallagher, who is a driver for the D.C.& P. bus line was overtaken at Englewood by Paul Klopfer who stopped in West Milton and secured another driver, returning the father to his home. Deputy Sheriff Frye investigated the accident and declared it "unavoidable". Westfall who is grief-stricken was not held. The child is survived by his parents and one brother Jack. The body was taken to the Geeting Funeral Home to be prepared for the funeral rites, which will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the First Brethren Church with Rev. Samuel J. Adams officiating. Interment will be made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
