The Death of Freeman D. Skinner
In the death of Freeman D. Skinner on Saturday, Dec. 18, 1897, Troy has lost one of her prominent citizens. He was born in Troy, May 15, 1829, and his whole life was spent in the city of his birth. He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Janvier, Oct. 13, 1859. Of his marriage, a daughter, Emma, was born, who after a brief married life, died several years ago. In February, 1859, he joined the New School Presbyterian Church and to the day of his death, he was a faithful member and passed to the great beyond with a sincere Christian's hope of a blessed resurrection. During the years of the civil war and for some time previous, he was a successful merchant and having accumulated a competence, retired from business and devoted his time to the care of his varied interests. During the later years of his life, he was not in robust health and he sought change of scene and climate for several winters in California and Florida. His friends were almost as numerous as the acquaintances he made. No one could be in his company for any length of time without being attracted by his genial nature, happy temperament and pleasant presence, characteristics which he possessed to a degree rarely bestowed upon any man. It is a feeble tribute to his memory to say that he will be sorely and sadly missed within a large circle. To his bereaved widow and grandchildren, upon whom the blow has fallen the heaviest, goes forth the deep felt sympathy of the community that cherishes the memory of this honest man, good citizen and constant Christian.
