John Martin Holfinger
John Martin Holfinger was born in Darke County, Franklin Township, Ohio, on Sept. 29, 1860; he departed this life at his home on Troy Pike on Monday afternoon, April 18, 1927 aged 66 years, six months and 19 days. He was united in marriage with Susannah Mohler on Oct. 29, 1883. The wife survives together with the following children born to this wedlock: Samuel B.; Mrs. Fanny Morrow; Mrs. Sarah Fisher; Mrs. Elizabeth Bowman; and Mrs. Elsie Angle, all of whom live in the same community. There are twelve grandchildren, eight boys and four girls. The deceased was one of a family of fourteen children. There were seven widely known Holfinger brothers up until last year, when the circle was broken by the death of Sebastian Holfinger who was killed in an auto accident. Just last fall only living sister Rose Reichman died. Five brothers are yet living: George, John, Peter, Barney, and Samuel, all are living in Covington. There are a large number of other relatives who live to mourn the death of this one. Dedicated to God in Holy Baptism when a child, and in early youth after proper instruction he became a confirmed member of this St. John's Lutheran Church, having been confirmed by the Rev. Schmogrom in 1875. He remained faithful to his confirmation vow. He served on the church council for many years, and so long as health permitted was a regular attendant at church services. He continued to support the church up until the time of his death. Nine years ago, Mr. Holfinger felt first symptoms of a type of paralysis, or shaking palsey; two years and since that time gradually grew worse. He has been entirely helpless for four years, unable to lie down in bed and had to be fed. Much of the time he suffered intense pain. Thro' it all his mind remained clear and keen, and having his speech up until a week previous to his death. Martin Holfinger spent his entire life in the community in which he died. He was a man of influence among the neighbors. He was a faithful husband, a kind and loving father, a true brother, a Christian man. John wrote: "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them."
