Mrs. Elizabeth Smither
The hearts of a large circle of friends are saddened by the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Smither, who died in Rome, N. Y., last week. Her body was brought back to her home in Springfield, and on Monday morning was conveyed to Troy and laid away in Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Smither belonged to one of the pioneer families of Troy, her father, Samuel Johnson, being a settler here in the early part of the century, where she was born nearly three score and ten years ago. Her husband, Newton Smither, died in 1873, and in 1882 she removed to Springfield, which has been her home ever since. The deceased as a girl and woman won the love of all who knew her by her lovely traits. She possessed a character of more than ordinary strength, which was displayed in the tenacity of her friendships. She was a devoted Christian and her life was a striking exemplification of the sustaining and strengthening power of God's blessed promises. The sunny side of her character was always displayed to the world even when she was bowed down with grief in the first year of widowhood. Her life was a bright and happy example of a noble, large hearted charitable and Christian woman.
