William H. Simons
William H. Simons was born in Troy, Ohio, January 15th, 1839. He spent his early life in Troy and at the beginning of the war enlisted in Company A, 44th Ohio Vol. Infty., and later in Company H, 147th Ohio. In 1867 he removed to Lawrence, Kas., where he lived until August 4th, 1896, when he went to the Hospital at the National Military Home, Leavenworth, Kas., for medical treatment. His sufferings during the last year of his life were very severe, but he bore them with the fortitude that becomes a soldier, patiently and uncomplainingly. On Sunday evening, June 27th, 1897, just as the last rays of the setting sun fell upon him, he peacefully breathed his last and was once more a comrade in that greater army which has already passed to the country where there is not strife. His remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Kas., under the impressive service of the G. A. R.
