Charles Patty Dies Sunday Afternoon
Charles M. Patty, prominent resident of Pleasant Hill, passed away at his home in that village Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Death was due to cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. Patty was one of the most influential citizens of the community. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and Athens University, and following his graduation entered the teaching profession and for a number of years taught school in and near Pleasant Hill. The last 40 years of his public life were spent in the grain business as a member of the firm of The Myers & Patty Company.
Failing in health he retired from active life a few years ago. He was 82 years of age.
He is survived by his widow; one daughter Mrs. Maude Gravitt of Dayton, and one son, Charles M. Patty, Jr. of Hamlet, Ind.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the residence, Rev. O. P. Furnas officiating. Interment will be made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of E. E. Geeting. It is the wish of the family that flowers be omitted.
Charles M. Patty was the oldest child of Dr. and Sarah Patty of Pleasant Hill. He came into their home Nov. 13, 1849. He attended the local school and then took a course in Athens College and afterward became a school teacher in and about Pleasant Hill for a few years. He became the proprietor of the first drug store in Pleasant Hill.
On May 17, 1877, he was united in marriage with Maria Elley Hill and for 54 years and more they have been permitted to journey together in life.
For 40 years he was active in the business life of this community, a business that brought him in contact with the people for many miles around. By his rugged honesty and upright dealings he commanded the confidence and esteem of the people. The utmost integrity characterized his activities and none appreciated his worth more than those who were closely associated with him in business affairs. He was generous, ever ready to give a helping hand. He was not a man of many words but his life was full of kindly deeds. He was a member of the school board for a time and in many other ways he displayed a deep interest in the public welfare. When the new Christian Church was erected he made a generous contribution toward the enterprise and was ever ready to render financial support to the work of the church.
Brother and Sister Patty were blessed with three children. One little girl died in early childhood. The other two are still living, Mrs. W. A. Gravett of Dayton and Charles Minov of Hamlet, Ind. The grandchildren are Charles H. Gravett, Edmond J. Gravett, Patty Jane Gravett and Robert Gravett of Dayton, and Charles Patty, III and Richard Patty of Hamlet, Ind.
These children, together with the wife and mother, will miss a kind, affectionate father and devoted husband, now that he is gone never to return. His departure occurred on Sunday, Dec. 6, 1931. Age 82 years and 23 days.
We live in deeds not years,
He lives most who thinks most,
Feels the noblest and acts the best.
We wish to thank the neighbors and friends for their many acts of
kindness and sympathy shown us during our great sorrow.
