Taps were sounded here early this morning for one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War, when Jacob Tobias passed away at his home on S. Harrison St., from the effects of advanced age, after an illness extending over a long period. He was 87 years of age.
Mr. Tobias was a lifelong resident of Miami County, having been born in this vicinity. He was always active in the civic affairs of the community, having served as director of the Covington Building and Loan, property assessor, and Marshall of Covington for several years. Besides these activities he was the possessor of a wonderful war record, having served in practically every major engagement in the Civil War.
He entered the services a private of Company B, 94th Ohio Volunteer Inf., August 7, 1862, was wounded at Kenesaw mountain and was mustered out of services June 5, 1865. He participated in operations in Kentucky during Hood's and Smith's invasions, from August 31 to October 31st, 1862. He saw action at Tate's Ford, Perrysville, Stone River, Tenn., Hoovers Gap., Chickamauga, Chattanooga Tenn. Lookout Mountain, Resacca, Kingston, Pine Mountain, battle of Atlanta, assault on Kenesaw, battle of Jonesboro, siege of Savannah, battle of Bentonville, Lexington, and nearly a score of other minor engagements.
He was present at the surrender of General Joseph E. Johnston's army, marched with General Sherman to the sea, and marched to Washington in the closing days of the war. His record was one of the most enviable ones of the veterans from this section of the state.
For many years Mr. Tobias lived north of Clayton on the Stillwater Pike, and also lived in the vicinity of Bradford, for several years. His wife preceded him in death Sept. 15, 1928.
He is survived by one daughter Mrs. Dora Morrison, of Columbus and a son, Frank Tobias, of Portland, Oregon.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 P. M. at the Routzahn Brothers funeral parlors. Rev. C. F. McKee officiating. Burial will be made in Highland cemetery.
