Capt. Palmer Dies In California
A telegram announcing the sudden passing of Capt. Samuel D. Palmer, at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. was received by his daughter, Mrs. S. N. Arni of Bellfontaine last evening. The death occurred at about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon.
Capt. Palmer lived in Covington for about 45 years in the home on S. Pearl St. now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Maier. He, with Mrs. Palmer removed to Los Angeles to be with their daughter, Mrs. Robert Davis, and other relatives who had removed to that city. The charm and beauty of the climate became dimmed after the loss of his beloved wife a year and a half ago. He gave himself to the care of his daughter, Mrs. Davis, who is also in delicate health. Although enjoying the summer months here in Ohio visiting his daughter Mrs. Arni, he was ever solicitous to Mrs. Davis, whose health kept her at home.
Capt. Palmer will be remembered in Covington by a number of friends, many of whom greeted him during his visit here in September. It was his delight to visit the Armory, while here and meet Capt. Dunkle and others who trained under his direction in years past. He was a civil war veteran, joining the ranks when very young. Many were the stories he told to the interested young folks of the hardships of war and old Libby Prison. He was one of the Union men from his home town, Chambersburg, Pa. removing to Ohio after the war.
After his marriage to Miss Nancy Belle Hill, they removed to Covington, where they were active members of the Methodist Church, taking part in other town activities until their removal to California. Even there, Mr. Palmer, although 82 years of age was always ready for services in civic and church affairs.
Two daughters, Mrs. Arni and Mrs. Davis, with one grandson, alone remain as those nearest, although many relatives and friends will note the passing of one whose friendship and brotherly cheer reached beyond all earthly time.
