Miami Union
31 December 1896
Mrs. Rachel Pearson (nee Perry)
Was born near Covington, Miami County, Ohio, December 30th, 1830. Her father Amos Perry, was a native of Newberry S.C., and an emigrant to Ohio in 1814; her mother's family name being Mary Long. Mr. Perry was a man of more than ordinary intelligence and took an active interest in education. He succeeded, even at an early day, in having his large family well educated. The subject of our sketch, very early in life, manifested a desire for learning, and developed a taste for literature. Her early pen sketches bear evidence of talent, and had the opportunities of that day been equal to those of the present time, she, no doubt, would have acquired fame as a writer. From a number of her early efforts, carefully preserved by her son Walter, I select the following "acrostic," written when she was a mere girl:
Remember Lord, Thy children all,
And when they do upon thee call,
Cease not to answer prayer.
Heaven's their hope, they only crave
Eternal peace beyond the grave;
Lord, they are in Thy care.
Deceased took up the profession of teaching while yet in her teens, and for a number of years she was a popular teacher in the public schools of the county. She taught in Covington, Frederick, and in various county districts. At the age of 18 she embraced the Christian religion and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Covington, remaining a member thereof until The Friends organized a church in Melton, a few years since, when she withdrew by letter, from the former and became a member of the latter. She was married to Paul Pearson October 3rd 1855.
