Edith Ruth Bucholtz Smith
Edith Ruth Bucholtz Smith, daughter of the late John C. Bucholtz, was born on June 22, 1898; departed this life on Monday evening, August 22, 1927 at the Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, aged 29 years, one month, and 28 days. On Oct. 29, 1917 she was united in marriage with Walter C. Smith. To this union five children were born, four daughters and one son. The oldest child, Glenna, aged nine years, 2 months and 23 days, whose body lies in one of these caskets, was instantly killed in the auto accident last Saturday afternoon. The other children are: Ida Maceile aged 7 years; Charles aged 5 years; Ruth aged 3 years; and Lillian aged 14 months. Along with the husband and the four small children, their remain of the immediate family, five brothers and two sisters. The sisters are Mrs. Lizzie Waitman and Mrs. Emma Wade; the brothers are: Dave, Fred, John, Barney, and Albert Bucholtz. Mrs. Smith was dedicated to God in Holy Baptism while in infancy. At the age of 15 years, after careful instruction in the Bible and the Christian life, she became a confirmed member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Covington. Mrs. Smith's death was caused by an auto accident. On last Saturday afternoon about twelve-thirty, the family left home in their automobile all well and happy. They were driving east on the County line road at the crossing of the Rangeline road, they were struck by an auto coming from the south. Both cars were more or less demolished. The Smith car was turned over several times. Strange to say Mr. Smith, who was driving remained in the car all during the turnover and was able to crawl out with only a few minor bruises. The wife and five children were lying around at different places. Glenna, the oldest daughter was dead, the others were seriously mangled. They were first taken to the home and then to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. The wife and mother died on Monday, some of the other children are still in a serious condition. We understand that while the other machine was almost completely wrecked, the two occupants were not seriously hurt. Seemingly it was an unavoidable accident. However it should serve to make us all more cautious. Mrs. Smith was yet in the prime of life, she was a devoted daughter and sister, a loving and tender wife and mother, a kind good neighbor. Unexpectedly and suddenly she has been taken from this earth to await the judgement of a righteous God. Truly, in the midst of life we are in death. May God in His mercy comfort all the bereaved ones.
