Miami Union
26 April 1900
William Shaffer was born in Newton Township, east of here, 23 June 1876, and departed this life at his home in Laura. He was the son of Joseph and Margaret Shaffer. On March 24, 1896, he was married to Leota Netzley, and to this union 8 children were given, one of whom preceded the father to the spirit world. For the last five years he had been a member of the Christian Church, in Laura, and faithfully lived according to the profession he made. His sickness was of short duration, but he was all that time sufferer beyond the power of a pencil to describe, the disease being appendicitis. He was a young man highly esteemed. When the last hours came he faced the enemy with the courage of a true soldier. He called his loving wife and mother to his side and taking each by his hand said: "I shall have to leave you now, take care of the little ones" and give many words of cheer to those who witnessed his dying hour. Thus another devoted husband, an obedient son, a beloved brother, and kind neighbor has been removed from the community. The funeral was held in Laura, Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. P. Furnace. Interment in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
