Walter E Duer
age 64, for many years engaged in the clothing business in Troy, associated with the late C J Harr, and son, William Harr, under the firm name, Harr, Duer & Harr, long one of Troy's leading enterprises, died at his home, 509 West Water street, Thursday evening at 6:40 o'clock. He had been in failing health for a period of a year and a half and his death occurred after a steady decline during which he received treatment at Stouder Memorial hospital.
Masonic funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the late residence. The service will be in charge of the Coleman commandery, No 17, Knights Templar, of which Mr. Duer was a member and past commander. Burial will be made in Riverside cemetery.
Walter Duer was the last member of the family of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Worthington Duer, who came to Miami county, near Fletcher, when the decedent was a small child. He was born in Shelby County, Sept 3, 1868. As a young man in 1889, Mr. Duer came to Troy to attend school and to work in the Harr store in spare hours. Some years later, after completing his schooling, he was taken into the Harr firm, the name becoming Harr, Duer & Harr. He maintained his interest until a few years ago when he disposed of it to the Harr family.
Mr. Duer always maintained an interest in the educational progress of the city of Troy, having served as president of the board of education for some years. He was followed by Dr George McCullough, who preceded the present board president, Walter E Coles.
Fraternally, Mr. Duer was active in all bodies of Masons. He was honored by all groups of that order with offices. He was past master of Franklin lodge, No 14, F&AM, past high priest of Franklin chapter, No 24, RAM, past thrice illustrious master, Franklin Council, No 14, R&SM, past commander of Coleman Commandery No 17, Knights Templar, and a member of the Troy chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church.
Mr. Duer and Miss Helen A Cooke of Piqua were married, two children being born to them, Elsie and John, both of whom survive. Mrs. Duer preceded him in death in 1925. A Bbother, Clyde, died about three years ago.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Effie Young Duer, to whom he was married two years ago; his daughter, Mrs. Elsie Duer Paschall, of this city, and a son, John, of Columbus.

A score of Knights Templar in uniform, members of Coleman Commandery, No. 17, were among those assembled at the home on East Water street at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon to pay a last tribute to Mr. Duer. The funeral was conducted by Dr. Walter P. Castoe, minister of the First Methodist Episcopal church, who also read favorite hymns of Mr. Duer. Earnest tribute was paid to the faithfulness of him who had gone and the minister spoke especially of the calmness, patience and faith with which an illness extended over a year was endured. The impressive Knight Templar service was then conducted by Commander H. L. Hollis and Rev. Upton B. Thomas, acting prelate. The Six Knights in attendance acted as a guard of honor and the pallbearers were all past commanders of Coleman commandery, being I. H. Shipman, Carl Peters, Paul Braunschweiger, John D. Fagan, Carl Norris and Harold A. Pauly. Burial was made in the family plot at Riverside cemetery.
