June 22, 1911   Veteran - Civil War - 174th O. V. I.

SMALL, (FIRST NAME NOT GIVEN) - Fairview--A pioneer and one of the most venerable men of this community, died Friday evening at 10 o'clock at his home here death being due to paralysis from which he had suffered for the last eighteen months.  He was born Nov, 3, 1830, in Montgomery county but when still a child came to this neighborhood with his parents and spent his entire life here except during his services in the Civil war he being a member of the 174th O. V. I.  He followed the occupation of farming and was quite successful.  He was a member of Alexander Mitchell Post, G. A. R. and of the Piqua Baptist church.  Four children survive him, J. T. Small, J. W. Small, Mrs. Frank DeWeese and Mrs. Oren Esty.  There are also nine grandchildren.  He also leaves two brothers, Louis Small of Piqua and James of Seamon, Kansas, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Winans of Piqua.  The funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. D. S. Ferguson of Troy.  Interment was made at Forest Hill cemetery, Piqua.
