Troy Times - Veteran - 44th Ohio
April 14, 1864
KESSLER, GEORGE - On last Wednesday afternoon, while crossing Main Street, from Warings corner toward the King Hotel, a soldier by the name of George Kessler was shot and died in a few minutes from the effect of the wound.--He was a veteran of the 44th Ohio, and was at home on furlough. He had been married just the Saturday before his death. A coroner's inquest was had over his remains, but no evidence was brought before the jury sufficient to place the guilty deed upon any particular person. It is indeed strange, if not inga'erious, that so many persons could be standing by and around where the deed was committed, and none of them able to swear who did the shooting.--Greenville Journal, April 6.
