SHACKELFORD, DR. R. J. - Death of Dr. Shackelford - Our citizens were shocked on Saturday last on learning that Dr. R. J. Shackelford, of this place had committed suicide the day before at Medway. Dr. Shackelford has for some months been subject to mental aberration, owing to poor health, and the deed was done unquestionably while reason was dethroned. He left a note announcing that he was going to end his existence by taking belladona (deadly night shade) which he helped himself to in a physician's office, and about an ounce of which was missing. He was brought to Troy for interment. Dr. S. had been a resident of this place for some eight or nine years, and was a valuable citizen and a skillful physician. His professional brethren present for publication the following:

Troy, Ohio, Feb. 5th, 1866

At a meeting of the Medical Profession of Troy, held Sunday, Feb. 4th, at the office of Dr. H. Coleman, to take action in regard to the death of R. J. Shackelford, M. D., Dr. H. Coleman was called to the chair, and Dr. J. H. Green appointed Secretary. A committee consisting of Drs. E. Sabin, Geo. Keifer, I. S. Meeks and L. C. Fouts, appointed to report resolution, presented the following, which were unanimously adopted. As our much respected friend and professional associate, Dr. R. J. Shackelford, has in the Providence of God been called away from us--

Resolved, That in the death of Dr. Shackelford the community has lost a valuable citizen, an honest man, a conscientious Christian, and a competent and useful physician.

Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the bereaved wife, the brothers and relatives of the deceased and especially in the manner of his death. We would also recognize in this dispensation the hand of Providence, who often shapes our destinies in a way beyond our control, and brings about results mysterious and inscrutable. We would likewise bow with submission to the ways of Providence, trusting that in the future the clearer manifestations of truth will make all things plain and justify the ways of God to man.

Resolved, That a copy of the proceedings of this meeting be furnished the family of the deceased, and the press of this place for publication.

H. Coleman, Chairman

J. H. Green, Secretary
