PARTLOW, JOHN C. - Mr. John C. Partlow, closed his earthly career at midnight, Dec. 17th, 1863, in his 34th year, after a most painful illness of eight days from an unusually violent type of Erysipelas. He was diligent in business, moral in general deportment affable in society, and affectionate in the home circle. He received an earth religious training, from a faithful mother, the influence of which never departed from him. Although not a profession of religion, when attacked with his last sickness, yet with the advantage of a Christian education by divine blessing, he was able to "lay hold on the hope set before him in the Gospel," he began immediately "to set his house in order" having the premonition that, "he should die and not live." He gratefully received religious counsel, joined in earnest penitential, prayer, and found peace in Christ.--His experience was "clear, satisfying, consoling, and proved a very present help in time of need. He said with much assurance, "if I die, I shall be saved." He spoke tenderly and fervently to his wife, and many near friends, and send touching messages to absent ones urging all to "seek first the Kingdom of God." In the singing of beautiful spiritual hymns, his soul seemed to be borne above.

"Where sin, and pain and death depart,

And pleasures never die."

Having given intelligent directions as to all his secular affairs, and adjusting everything as favorable as possible for the family, he said "'Praise the Lord. He doeth all things well;' if I die to-day, I shall go straight to Heaven." Then visions of brightness, and of his departed children, seemed to pass before his eyes, truly, a beam from Heaven was sent to cheer him through the gloomy vale, and he has gone, as we trust, from the midnight of earth, to the noonday of glory. He has left wife and little son to weep, but not without hope. May the blessing of the God of the widow and the Father of the fatherless ever attend them.
