TELFORD, HUGH - Died on the 5th inst., after five days intense suffering from gastric fever, Hugh Telford, son of James and Mary Telford.  Aged 9 years, 7 months and 22 days.  {Communicated} - In this dispensation of Providence, the truth is forcibly pressed upon our mind, that there is a God in heaven who rules according to his own will, and does that which he sees to be the best for us, and his government.  Nor is he at all governed by the wishes and desire of short sighted men.  Neither are his wise plans to be frustrated by any efforts of man.  Of this we have had strong proof the case of our much loved one, notwithstanding he was, vigorously, yet cautiously treated there appeared to be no human of the disease--and no human instrument instrumentally could stay, the hand of the inexorable King of terrors.  But it is God that hath done it and it becomes us to be silent, and not condemn the dealings of the Most High, for we know that he does not afflict willingly but sends his chastisements for our good.  He has seen fit to take the center of our affections from us, and from a world of sin and woe, before he was hardened in the ways of transgression.  And we trust his young Spirit is now with the redeemed alone.  May we all learn that "the son of man cometh as a thief in the night," and be prepared to meet him.      A. T.
