SMELTZER, HON. JOHN - Obituary - This sudden death was recorded in our last paper.  He was one of our most esteemed citizens, therefore, we would not pass over the event of his departure, without a brief notice of the character which made his death a loss to the community in which he lived.  He was born in Franklin county, Pa., A. D. 1796 removed to Troy in 1837 and was elected an associate judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Miami county in 1842.  By his integrity, as a citizen he had won for himself the general esteem.  He always made his arrangements, to abide by his engagements--to fulfill his promises in the manner he made them--to pay his debts at the time they become due--to be true to the confidence reposed in him.  His candor caused him to have many friends, and few enemies.  It was manifest especially when in these days it is found most rarely and therefore shines most brightly--in politics he was remarkably free from that bigoted illiberality, and narrow minded prejudice, that will hold no fellowship with any that do not belong to a particular party.  The natural consequence was that those who differed with him, deemed him honest in his views, a man in whom they could place confidence.  As a christian consistence, was his leading characteristic.  The Sabbath always saw him in the sanctuary; the Sabbath School always found him with his class studying the Bible; the prayer meeting and the concert always witnessed him with the little band, who "forsake not the assembling of themselves together."  His growing interest to the progress of religion endeared him to the church of which he was a member.  God gave him a premonition of his speedy departure in the first hour of his sickness, and the little time before death gained the mastery of his senses he spent in commending his spirit to the Lord Jesus, as the only Savior.  He has left an interesting family to mourn his loss, whose grief is shared by the sympathy of many friends.  May they realize the fulfillment of the promise made to the widow and the fatherless.
