GATES, PHILIP J. - Philip J. Gates, one of Troy 's oldest and best known business men, died quite suddenly at 1 o'clock Saturday morning at his home on West Main street .  He had been at his store the evening before and while for a day or two he had not been feeling well his illness was not thought to be at all serious.  He retired at 10:30 and at 1 o'clock his wife awakened, went to his bedside and found his life was over.  A physician was summoned but nothing could be done.  Apoplexy superinduced by acute indigestion was stated to have been the cause of his death  Mr. Gates was born in Germany 69 years ago and was brought to this country when three years of age landing at New Orleans.  The family later removed to Cincinnati and he finally came to Miami county.  He learned the tailoring business with his father and for 45 years conducted a store in this city.  For many years his place of business was in the room recently acquired by the Troy National bank.  Since then he has been located on East Main street .  Forty-three years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Ziegenfelder, who, with four children, survives him.  The children are Gertrude, George and Edward of Troy and Clifford of Pittsburg.  A sister, Miss Callie Gates, lives in Troy and a brother, George, in Frankfort , Ind.   Mr. Gates was of a kindly disposition and pleasing personality and was highly respected for his integrity and high business ideals.  He had accumulated considerable property in Troy and elsewhere.  He was a member of Franklin lodge F. & A. M. and of Coleman Commandery, Knights Templar, and of the Royal Arcanum.  He was connected with the Lutheran church.  The funeral services were held from his late residence Tuesday afternoon and were under the auspices of the Knight Templar.  Rev. C. E. Paulus spoke briefly.  Interment at Riverside .
