DILLAWAY, LEVI F.
- Levi F. Dillaway, long a prominent citizen, and an old time
merchant of this city, passed away on Monday, the 20th inst. Born in
Granville, N. Y., in 1824, he was reared in Poultney, Vt., until he was 17, when
he went to Boston where he was employed in a store. Ten years later he
emigrated to Brown County. There he remained some twelve years, coming to
Troy in 1859. He tried his hand at farming on a tract of land adjoining
this city on the west, but becoming convinced that farming was not his forte,
while selling goods was, he went into the dry goods business during the civil
war. This he followed for nearly thirty years, having quite a number of
partners during that time. He had not been in active business for ten
years past. For about forty-years he was an elder in the Presbyterian
Church. His wife died about two years ago. He leaves two daughters,
one married to Rev. C. C. Herriott, of Santa Cruz, Cal., the other to Col. T. D.
Fitch, of Troy, and quite a number of grandchildren. Although he had not
been in very good health this summer his death came unexpectedly to his relative
and friends. The funeral services will be held this afternoon, at the
Gospel Mission Chapel, Rev. Forman of the A. M. E. Church officiating and
Interment at Riverside.
