LORE, HENRY - A colored man named McColor shot and killed another colored man named Henry Lore, here on Sunday last. Lore, who was a notoriously bad and quarrelsome man, appears to have taken a dislike to the other for some unknown reason, and swore he would kill him. In pursuance of this purpose he procured a billy and knife, and followed McColor about a good portion of the day repeating his bloody threats. The latter finding his life in danger, and becoming tired of avoiding Lore, procured a double barrel shot gun, and then notified Lore to cease his demonstrations. This only rendered Lore the more furious and, with billy in one hand and knife in the other he attempted to rush upon McColor. The latter retreated a short distance still warning Lore to desist, but in vain. He rushed on, when his intended victim fired a shot at his legs with the view of disabling him. The charge entered his leg but did not stop him, and McC. then fired the other charge into his head. This brought him down. He was carried to his home and died within twenty-four hours. McColor gave himself up, and on examination next morning before Mayor Morris, the case being shown by several respectable witnesses, both white and colored, to have been clearly one of self-defense, he was promptly discharged.
