THOMAS, HOWARD - age 81, of Butler Township, died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. surrounded by his loving family. Howard was born near Dizney, KY on Dec. 24, 1927. He married Faye Powers, also from Dizney, in Richmond, IN on Feb. 7, 1953, and they always resided in the Dayton area. He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was wounded in combat while serving in the 49th Field Artillery at Yonchon, Korea, on Nov. 3, 1951 and was awarded several commendations including the Purple Heart Award. He was an avid gardener throughout his life and always enjoyed sharing with friends and family. Howard was a 40 year member of Englewood Lodge #743, Free & Accepted Masons. He was also an expert woodworker and took great pleasure in making fine furniture for the entire family. Howard professed a faith in Jesus Christ in 1953, a true Christian gentleman. He is survived by Faye, his beloved wife of 56 years; three sons and their spouses, Gary & Margie, Dale & Vicki, Scott & Polly; two granddaughters, Victoria & Rachel; four grandsons, Ryan, Wade, Evan & Spencer; two sisters, Irene & Mary; and a host of extended family & friends. Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Monday at the GEORGE C. MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, "North Dayton Chapel" 5040 Frederick Pike at Needmore Road. Pastor Don Jackson, officiating. Interment Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Tipp City. Howard's family, will receive friends 12 noon-3:00 p.m. Sunday at the George C. Martin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers or funeral memorabilia, the family requests the memorial donations be sent to the Veterans Administration of Dayton in memory of Howard Thomas (veteran), 4100 W.
