- Troy - Doug B. Swartz, 52, of Troy, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, May 15,
2009, at Wright State University, Dayton. Doug was born October 16, 1956,
in Troy, to the late Harriet E. (Culbertson) Swartz and Marvin C. Swartz of
Muncie, Ind. He will be missed and remembered by his dad and stepmother,
Marvin and Connie Swartz of Muncie, Ind., his wife and best friend, Mary R.
Rinehart Swartz of Troy, whom he married Dec. 27, 2003, in Anoka, Ind.;
daughters, Jossie E. M. Rinehart of Houston, Texas and Megan A. Rinehart of
Troy; grandson, Jacob N. Herrera; numerous nieces and nephews, including:
Elizabeth Roberts and Stephany Roberts of Vandalia; sister and brother-in-law,
Jackie and Chris Roberts of Vandalia; brothers and sister-in-law, Daniel and
Diane Cochran of Morgan, Minn. and David Cochran of Muncie: sisters, Dawn Bond
of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Diane Cochran of Stuart, Fla.; brothers-in-law,
Michael D. Rinehart and his wife Samantha of Kewanna, Ind., and Phillip Rinehart
of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Anjanette Wilmot and her husband Kevin of
Fort Wayne, Ind. and Karen Fredericks and her husband James of Lexington, Ky.;
mother-in-law, Mary H. Rinehart of Fort Wayne, Ind.; special friends, Stephen
and Julie Byrd of Logansport, Ind.; his special companion, his dog Hank;
numerous aunts and uncles; cousins; extended family; and many friends. He
was a 1975 graduate of Covington High School, a graduate of Wright State
University and attended Capital University in Columbus. "Big
Doug," as everyone called him, lived life to the fullest. He had a
teaching career that started at Bethel High School, for six years, where he also
served as head football coach from 1984-86. Doug taught school in
Covington for 22 years and was the assistant football coach from 1987 to present
and was the defensive coordinator for Covington High School for more than 12
years. Doug was a member of the Covington High School Athletic Hall of
Fame, and was inducted November of 2006 for Outstanding individual Achievements
in Athletics and February of 2008 as a member of the 1973 state champion
football team. He was a member of the Covington Education Association,
Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, Miami Valley
Football Coaches Association, Ohio High School Football Coaches Association and
Covington Bucc Boosters. He was the former president and member of the
Covington Sunday Softball League from 1980-85 and he was a four-time class
advisor for the Covington High School classes of 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2010.
He was a member of the Covington Church of the Brethren. Doug didn't let
any turf grow under his feet, he was enthusiastic about life, loved every
aspect of football and was a caring family man; he inspired and shared with so
many young people. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 20,
at the Covington High School football field (Smith Field) with George Faull,
Evangelist officiating. Please dress comfortably or in football attire.
Calling hours for family and friends to gather will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday,
May 19, in the Covington High School gymnasium. Private family interment
will be held at a later date. Doug's family has requested in lieu of
flowers, contributions, if so desired, may be made to: Covington Schools Dollars
