WENZLAU, C. NORMAN
- Former Postmaster Dies Monday at
Stouder - Death claimed a prominent Tipp City man on Monday evening
following a seven-week illness at Stouder Hospital. C. Norman Wenzlau, age
76, succumbed at 6:30 p.m. April 5. A longtime businessman in the area, Mr.
Wenzlau was a retired Tipp City postmaster, having held the job for 21
years. He served as an insurance agent for some 50 years and also was in
partnership with R. Hamilton Davis. The two operated a service station at
the corner of Third and Main Streets known as D & W. Born on December 2,
1894, he was the son of Charles Peter and Eugenia Smith Wenzlau. His
original home was in Celina, but he moved to Tipp City at an early age and
was educated in the Tipp School system graduating from Tipp High School.
Mr. Wenzlau attended Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware and was a member of the Army
Air Corps in World War I. During World War II, he served as a member of the
selective service board. He was a former president and board member of the
Maple Hill Cemetery Association. Mr. Wenzlau was also a member of the Zion
Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge 174 and the Frank E. Robinson Post of the
American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Alice Kessler Wenzlau; two
sons, Thomas Eugene Wenzlau, president of Ohio Weslayan University; and Navy
Commander Charles N. Wenzlau II of Arlington, Texas; and six grandchildren.
One brother, Russell, preceded him in death. Services will be conducted at
the Frings and Bayliff Funeral Home on Thursday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. E.
L. Parrish officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may
call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. today.
