TOOHEY, WILLIAM - Brakeman Killed - Wm. Toohey
Falls Off His Train - On Sunday evening last Wm. Toohey, a brakeman
on the Dayton & Michigan Railroad, fell from the top of a freight train and
received such injuries as caused his death. Toohey, a young man aged about
23 years, has been breaking on the D. & M. road for over a year. At the
time he met his death he was on a train which was loaded with ice at
Reynolds' Ice House. The train pulled out from the ice house switch shortly
after 6 p.m. When it arrived at Dayton, Toohey was missed, and orders were
telegraphed to a south-bound extra, which passed through Troy at about 9
o'clock--to keep a lookout for him. He was found lying near the track at
the bluffs, a short distance below the ice house. He had apparently fallen,
or been jolted off the side of the car, and his right arm and shoulder had
been taken off. He had been lying where he fell about three hours before he
was found. He was taken to Tippecanoe and cared for at the home of Mr.
George Barnes, but his injuries were too severe for medical skill and he
died Monday. It was not known where Toohey had a home, he being unmarried,
but it is understood he has sisters at Cleveland. His remains were interred
at Tippecanoe.
