KNIGHT, MRS. MATILDA - Mrs. Matilda Knight was born in
Lewis County, Ky., February 22, 1811, and fell asleep in Jesus on the
evening of April 1st, 1880, aged 69 years, 8 months and 9 days. Death
at last claimed her for his own, but she was prepared for the change;
for more than thirty years ago she gave her heart to her Savior, and
joined the Lostcreek Baptist Church. She was married to Wm. C. Knight
on the 8th day of August 1826; her husband having preceded her to a
world of glory over 20 yrs. ago. She was modest and retiring in
disposition, amiable and winning in her ways. She had clear conceptions
of duty, and was loved by all who knew her. About a week before she
fell asleep she said to Rev. Gardner, that she was ready to depart this
life, that she knew that her Redeemer liveth. For years she has been a
great sufferer, but all those years of pain, were borne with Christian
patience and courage. Death had no terrors for her. She would
naturally have desired to have lived longer for the sake of her
children, yet as far as she was concerned, she was anxious to be with
Christ which is far better. Her children who are left are deprived of
their best earthly friend, for who can love them and care for them as a
mother. She is not dead but sleepeth, not lost but gone before. May
the rich promise of our Heavenly Father be abundantly fulfilled to her
children and friends, who are bereft of the love of a mother and friend;
and may the sad bereavement lead the hearts of all her children and
friends to follow in her footsteps and clasp hands with her on Canaan's
happy shore.
Missing the face that was fairest,
Missing the heart that was pure,
Missing the smile that was dearest,
How can the stricken endure?
How but cling to that knowledge,
That comes to our spirits in pain,
Saying that she who is sleeping,
Liveth forever again.
Sleeps, for the spirit is living!
At the gate of the Heavenly Home,
Mother is waiting with patience,
Waiting for her children to come! S. G. H.
