KNOOP, JOHN H.
- At his residence in Staunton Township, on Saturday
morning last, Mr. John H. Knoop, in the 74th year of his age. Mr. Knoop was
a native of this county, born on the farm where he died, and on which his
entire life had been spent. He was a man of sterling qualities, and one
whose death is the greatest loss that this town and vicinity has sustained
in the past quarter of a century. He was the youngest member of the
well-known and greatly respected firm of "Knoop Brothers". The firm was
composed of three brothers, Jacob, George, and John H. neither of whom ever
married. Many years ago they succeeded to the estate of their father, which
consisted of the old homestead farm--an excellent one--and considerable
other property. These brothers united their efforts and by industry,
economy, and general good management, succeeded in adding to their
possessions until they became what might be termed in this section, quite
wealthy. About 15 or 16 years ago George died, and the business was
continued by Jacob and John in the same way, until some three or four years
ago Jacob, by "mental death" through softening of the brain or something of
the kind, became incapable of attending to any business whatever. Since
that time the entire management of all the affairs of the firm has devolved
upon John H., whose death we this week record. We have said above that in
the death of Mr. K. this town, and community had lost one of their best
friends. That is emphatically "true". He was truly a public benefactor--a
friend of both rich and poor--without an enemy, so far as we know, in the
World--truly, sincerely, deservedly respected and beloved by all who knew
him. He seemed utterly incapable of doing a wrong or unkind act. Kind,
liberal, charitable, benevolent, his life history is a volume of good deeds,
and liberal benefactions and now that he is gone a whole community will join
with one voice to bless his name and revere his memory.

KNOOP, JOHN H. - The funeral of Mr. John H. Knoop, of this
vicinity, last Sabbath afternoon, was largely attended. In the death of
Mr. Knoop, this community has lost one of its best and most valuable citizens.
In the Casstown Items - On Sabbath last the funeral of John H. Knoop took place
at his residence several miles south of this village. A large concourse of
people assembled to pay their tribute of respect to the worthy man, and to
follow his remains to the grave. Many of the county's prominent citizens
were present, and among the pall bearers we noticed, W. H. H. Dye, S. K. Harter,
Jacob Rohrer, H. W. Allen, Horace Coleman and J. M. Hart. Mr. Knoop will
be greatly missed. He was an open hearted man and public spirited to no little
degree. His generous gift to the county is but a single example of his
generosity, and had his useful life been spared, his benefactions would
doubtless have been increased. He was in his seventy-third year. The
funeral services were conducted by Elder A. L. McKinney.
