SCHNEPP, WM. (WILLIAM)
- Happened within a short distance
from Piqua. An old man by the name of Wm. Schnepp, residing near the
Shelby Co. line had a house, in that county, occupied by two men who bear the
reputation of being desperate characters. Yesterday (Tuesday) in company
with another man, he went to the house to collect back rent and order the
parties to leave the premises. He became involved in a quarrel with one of
the men, which resulted in blows. Mr. S. was getting the better of his
antagonist when the other tenant ran up and struck him a terrible blow with a
stick of wood, felling him to the ground. He then attacked Mr. Schnepp's
companion who had come to his relief, and in the meantime the other ruffian was
beating the prostrate man with brass knuckles until the arrival of other parties caused
him to desist. Mr. Schnepp arose and went home, but died in a few moments
after reaching there. Riddle and Carr, the murderers of Schnepp have been
arrested and will have a preliminary examination before Esquire Flynn, at
Houston, to-day. There is a general spirit of lawless in this part of the
country which is causing great uneasiness among good citizens. The hangman
is needed.
