THOMSON, WILBERT C. - To correct the many erroneous reports in
circulation in relation to the death of the late Wilbert C. Thomson, we state
the following on the authority of his father, Mr. J. T. Thomson, who has taken
all available means to ascertain the facts in the case: Mr. T. left the hotel
in Hartford at which he and his party were stopping, after supper, in company
with two other young men, for a walk about town. A few hours afterward
they were met on the street by another man who had made the acquaintance of
Mr. T. This man asked Mr. Thomson to take a walk with him in another
direction, to which he assented--the other two proceeding on to the hotel.
This was the last seen of Mr. T. till the next morning, when he was found at a
rough tavern some two miles from his place of stopping, where he had evidently
been decoyed, drugged, robbed, and otherwise maltreated. Mr. T. is
satisfied that the morphine taken by his son was not at all taken for the
purpose of suicide, but to allay pain and quiet the excitement of his nerves,
produced by the treatment he had received and the loss he had sustained.
It was afterwards ascertained that the individual who had decoyed him away was
a sharp scoundrel of the worst grade. Mr. Thomson and his family have
the deep sympathy of our entire community in their sad affliction.
