Stillwater Valley Gazette - Veteran - Sixth Corps, Army of the Potomac

May 9, 1872

SHELLENBERGER, CAPT. WILLIAM D. - Capt. William D. Shellenberger, son of Mr. Jacob E. Shellenberger, of Covington, O., at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. D. C. Shellenberger, in this town, on the 1st of May, inst., aged 30 years, 7 months and 7 days. The deceased was a native of Covington, and was highly esteemed for his social and other excellent qualities. After acquiring a substantial business and literary education, on the breaking out of the rebellion, Mr. S. assisted to raise Company A of the 110th Regiment, and went into the service as second lieutenant. He served in the Sixth Corps, Army of the Potomac, during the war, participating in all the principal battles. He was slightly wounded at Cedar Creek, more severely in the Wilderness, and badly at Petersburgh, and was honorably discharged, with impaired constitution. Five years ago, he removed to Brownsville, Nebraska, and engaged in the hardware business, which he successfully prosecuted, until failing health admonished him to desist. Then, disposing of his store, he repaired to the South, hoping to arrest disease by the effect of climate, but the malady, consumption, was too deeply seated, and he rapidly declined. Loving hands went to his assistance, and brought him to his native town, where he soon breathed his last. A dutiful son, a good citizen, a brave and patriotic soldier, a faithful friend--

"None knew him but to love him,
Nor named him but to praise."
