TAYLOR, HON. JOHN L. - The Hon. John L. Taylor suddenly dropped dead, at his post, in the General Land Office, at Washington, on the 6th inst., aged 70--of disease of the heart. Gen. T. came to Ohio, from his native State, Virginia, and began the practice of law in Chillicothe, over forty years ago. He entered public life as private secretary of Gov. McArthur, and was clerk of the State House of Representatives. He took an early interest in perfecting our militia service; and was useful for many years, professionally and as a citizen of Chillicothe. In 1818, he was elected to Congress; and filled the place, with eminent satisfaction to his constituents, for three terms. He was known as the most obliging member from Ohio; and, in fact, his promotion was more owing to his uniform urbanity and accommodating disposition, than to transcendent talent. His motto was "Integrity, Urbanity, Usefulness". His long absence in Washington, blasted his law practice, so that he finally sought a clerkship in Washington for a livelihood. He was never married. We may truly say, "Friend after friend departs", until, as one approaches old age, a majority have become translated, and one's own ties to earth essentially weakened. For many years, Gen. Taylor was one of our best friends. Peace to his memory! --Ed. Gazette
