Sauer, George

Miami Union

3/3/1898

Company F 71st OVI

George Sauer, aged seventy-six and a member of Co. G., 71st O. V. I., during the late war, was found drowned in the mill race at the rear of his late residence on Race Street, Friday evening. Several years ago Mr. Sauer suffered a stroke of paralysis and the weakness due to this cause and from his advanced age and his rather unwieldy bulk is supposed to be responsible for his death. He came home early in the evening and after a short conversation with his wife and daughter Louise, he went into the back yard and apparently to the water closet which is close to the race. It is supposed that he slipped on the shelving bank and fell in, his infirmities preventing his either effectually helping himself or audibly calling for aid. A few minutes after his exit, his daughter alarmed at his absence, searched for him, and made the discovery. Although not dead at that time he was past all aid, and never recovered consciousness. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon under the auspices of Colman Post, G. A. R. and Drury Command U. V. U. the sermon being delivered by Rev. H. J. Weave
