O. P. Toms was born in Frederick Co., Maryland August 10, 1822. When eighteen years of age he came to this county, near Fletcher, with his parents. He enlisted in the war with Mexico (1846 47) and served there over a year. After his discharge, he returned to his Miami Co. home; whence he went West, remaining a year then returned to Ohio, where, on October 2, 1856, he was united in marriage with Sarah J. Enyeart, daughter of Wm. Enyeart, of this county.
October 7th, 1861, he enlisted in the Civil war as a member of Co. E, 71st O.V.I. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant November 61, and later was promoted to Captain of the Co. He resigned June 17, 1863.
After serving in the war, he was a contractor, and in 85, he and his two sons, Wm. and Webster, when to California, where he remained until 1898. Having received a stroke of paralysis, he returned to his wife, at Troy, and for these three and one half years he has been greatly afflicted, and for the last year or so has been a great suffer until the end came.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Toms, three of who are living, Wm. and Webster, of San Diego, Ca., and Mrs. Clara Hafer of Little Rock, Arks. Mr. Toms was a good soldier, well liked by his comrades, genial and kind. He was a member of Coleman Post, G.A.R. He leaves a widow, three children and four sisters.
