Geroge Kerr
1766-1838
George Kerr 1766-1838 George was born in Philadelphia and after the
Revolution he became a ranger and scout, first with the Ohio Company at
marrietta, and later under his brother Captian Hamilton Kerr, both at Marietta
and Belpre, during the Indian War of 1791-1795. After the treaty of Greenville
in 1795, he setled at Bedell's Staion near Lebanon. And from there came
to Miami County Ohio around 1804.
Kerr took part in the defence of Fort Henry (now Wheeling West Virgina)
in September 1782, when the British attacked with neally 300 Indians and
Rangers. The garrison of 18 men, besides woman and boys, resisted so bravely
that the siege was abandoned in three days. George Kerr and his brother
Hamilton, aged 16 an 18 respectievly, were amoung the "boys."
It was during this siege that Betty Zane ran from the fort to a nearby
cabin and returned with a much needed supply of powder.
