Asaph was born in Colchester, Connecticut and was the father of Troy Ohio's first doctor, Dr Asa Coleman. Asaph and wife Eunice (nee Hollister) Coleman, came to Concord Township, Miami County Ohio to live near their son Asa. That was after 1811. Asaph was listed as a resident of Miami County Ohio but was on a trip to see relitives when he died. He was then buried at Glastonbury, Connecticut, in Green Cemetery.

Asaph was commissioned on 13 JUly 1777 and was a Surgeon of Colonel Howell Woodbridge's Regiment, General Erastus Walcott's Brigade of The Connecticut State Troops. He also served as Surgeon of Colonel Bolton's Regiment, commissioned 1 Oct 1778.
