    Lewis Boyer
    1756-1843

    He enlisted in Rockingham County Virginia and served with VanHeer's company, life guards to General George Washington. Lewis fough in several campaigns including the seige at Yorkstown. His war record was as follows:

    "By his excellency George Washington, Esq., general and commander-in-chief of The United States Of America. The bearer, Lewis Boyer, private Dragoon in the Independent Troop of Horse, commanded by Major VanHeer, being enlisted for war, and having served the sum of his engagement, consented to continue in service until the 31st day of December, inst., from which date he is hereby discharged from the American Army. And in consequence of his attention and fidelity, the commander-in-chief being authorized by the satutes of Congress, presents him with his horse, arms and accoutrements now in his possession as a gratuity."

    Given at Philadelphia this tenth day of December 1782

    Around 1810 he came to Miami County Ohio and and settled in Springcreek Township, near what later became the Miami/Shelby County Line. He later became a "circuit riding minister." He was granted 100 acres of land and a pension for his military service.

    He died in 1843 and is buried just acrost the Miami/Shelby County line in the old Wesley Chapel Cemertery, with full military honors. The inscription on his gravestone reads:

      "Here Boyer lies, who Britain's arms withstood
      Not for his own but for his country's good.
      The victor oft on famed Columbia's fields
      To death at last aged hero yields."
