The below record is not a part of The Children's Home Records. They were furnished by Carl A. Ellis of Bradford Ohio,and dated 17 Nov 2002 Ben was my grandfather: Grandpa Ellis was indeed taken by Isaac Gruber of Covington; I have a copy of the "Indentured Servant" paper from the Miami county courts. Grandpa's diaries listed Isaac Gruber as "Daddy Gruber". He received $100.00 on his 18th birthday as payment for his "services" to the Gruber's. Recorded newspaper article shows his father, James C. Ellis, to have died in 1891, not 1890 as listed -- it was by natural gas asphyxiation. James and Emma were living in "Slabtown", Washington St; Troy at the time of James' death. Grandpa's Brother, James B; was said to have been adopted by someone in Allen county, Ohio. Information states he ran away to parts currently unknown to this writer at this time. A sister, Ruth Mae Ellis, was also adopted by J.P. West in Miami county. by Carl Ellis
