PALMER CHAPEL CEMETERY

Bethel Township, Miami County, Ohio

PALMER CHAPEL/PALMER’S CHURCH CEMETERY is located at the intersection of Palmer Road and Bellafonte Road in Bethel Township, Miami County, OH which places it at the juncture of Miami, Greene, Clark, and Montgomery counties.  The original wooden church was built in 1810 by Methodist pioneers and replaced by a brick building (which still stands) in 1830.  The church and cemetery were abandoned after 1900 and both deconsecrated around 1917.  Legend has it that some or all of the bodies were removed and reburied in other cemeteries, but the tombstones were left haphazardly around the churchyard.  The cemetery has been vandalized.  Roland Roethler, who purchased the property in the 1970’s, recorded the basic vital information off the stones in the yard.  Another researcher, Ruth Mohr, also provided information supplied by James Richard Anderson, a great-great grandson of James and Anna Anderson who were buried in this cemetery.  Death dates of many of those buried here coincide with the Cholera Epidemic 1832-1849. Transcription by Deanne Peterson.
