STEINMETZ, RAYMOND D. - Funeral services will be held at
10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Deeter-Baird Funeral Home in Troy for Raymond
D. Steinmetz, 79, editor of the Troy Daily News from 1934 and its general
manager until 1959 when he retired to run for mayor of Troy. Dale Francis,
another former editor of the paper, will officiate at the funeral with
burial in Riverside. His tenure of office as Troy's mayor was a most
successful one, including establishment of the city's Human Relations
Commission, Civil Defense Commission and the Senior Citizens' Center, along
with the late William H. Maier, park commission president. Other public
works during his regime included expansion of the water works and electric
plant, the new Market and Broadford bridges, the modern firehouse, and the
Memorial walkway on the levee, as well as adding 75 acres of parkland to the
city. Another outstanding event was the Sequencentenial celebration of the
city. Steinmetz was active in the Troy Rotary Club and edited its weekly
newsletter. He held a 50 year award for membership in Franklin Lodge of the
Masons and was a lifelong member of the First United Church of Christ. A
native of Troy, he was married to Ruby Edmunds Steinmetz who preceded him in
death in 1953, as did a brother and a daughter. Survivors include a son,
William Douglas Steinmetz of Los Angeles, California, and a daughter Mrs.
Carl (Mary Caroline) Scholz of Vandalia. Friends may call at the funeral
home from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. Donations to the Troy Miami County Library
Building Fund may be made in lieu of flowers.
