URIAH HESS

Laura - Uriah Hess, an aged and a respected citizen, passed to his reward Jan 23rd, 1913.  His death caused by double lobar pneumonia.  He was the seventh child and youngest son of John & Barbara Hess, and was born near Union Bridge, Maryland, March 1st, 1850.  His early childhood was spent near his birthplace.  At the age of 10 years, he came with his parents to Ohio and located at Little York, Montgomery County, where they lived for 2 years, then moved to near Englewood, where he helped his father to operate a flour mill.  In 1870 they moved to what is known as the Coppock Mill farm south of Pleasant Hill where he was employed almost continuously for 40 years. He was united in marriage to Miss Armina Pearson Nov 5th, 1871 whose death occurred April 18th, 1897.  To this union were born 12 children, six sons and six daughters. The nine children who survive are: Mrs. Charles Faulkner of Ludlow Falls, Mrs. George Hoke of Brookville, Mrs. Bead Morris, James E. and Frank Hess and Mrs. Carl McClure of  near Pleasant Hill, Mrs. John Swank and William J. Hess of Covington and Orist W. Hess of Laura.  After the death of his companion his eldest children stood by him in deepest sorrow and helped him to care for his little ones, who had been made motherless by the cruel hand of death.  In his declining years his children all having married, he went to live with his eldest son, Orist W. of Laura, at whose home his death occurred.  He was taken seriously ill on Jan. 16th with that dread disease pneumonia and died the following Thursday at the age of 63 years, 10 months and 23 days. During his life as well as his last sickness he was always of a kind, patient and uncomplaining disposition and always made friends where ever he went. He leaves nine children, 26 grandchildren, one sister and a host of other friends and relatives to mourn his sudden death. The funeral services were held from the Brethren church in Pleasant Hill, last Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. and were conducted by Rev. G. B. Cain, pastor of the Ludlow Falls Christian Church, assisted by Rev. Mohler. Interment in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
