Miami Union
02 February 1928
Davis Martindale, 66, well known Miami county farmer, died at the Coleman Hospital Thursday morning at 4:30 o'clock. Although he had been in the hospital four weeks death came as a shock to the family as he was apparently on the road to recovery and it had been planned to remove him to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Blanche Bartel, on Saturday. Dilation of the heart was the cause of death and the last attack came just a few hours before his death. Mr. Martindale entered the hospital four weeks ago and submitted to an operation for hernia from which he had practically recovered. He was stricken with pneumonia while in the hospital but was recovering satisfactorily when the heart condition arose which proved fatal in a short time. Born on a farm in Monroe township on Aug 2, 1861, Mr. Martindale spent his entire life in Miami county. He was the son of John and Delilah Martindale. In 1883 he removed to a farm on the old Troy-Dayton road, just south of Troy, and 10 years later purchased the property. He resided there until eight years ago when he retired from active farming. Following his retirement he spent one year in this city and since then had resided with his daughter, Mrs. Bartel, who resides on the Troy-Piqua road across the highway from the Sweet Springs farm. The decedent was united in marriage with Laura Ella Eidemiller who preceded him in death 12 years ago. To this union were born three children, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Bartel, J V Martindale, who resided on the home farm on the Dayton pike, and Mrs. Edith Prakel who lives three miles west of this city. One grandchild, three brothers and one sister are also living. The brothers and sister are Ed Martindale of Paulding, Warren Martindale of Tippecanoe City, William Martindale of Phillipsburg and Mrs. Ella Nehr of Wisconsin. Mr. Martindale had been a member of the First Christian church of this city for a number of years. He had taken an active interest in civic affairs for many years during his active life. He served his township as school director for several years and was a member of the Miami county fair board for many years. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of the daughter, Mrs. Bartel, and at 2:30 from the First Christian church in this city. Burial will be made in the Riverside cemetery.
