Pleasant Hill -- James O. Minton, son of William and Mary E. Minton, was born at Dayton May 10, 1841. James was one of a family of 13 children, of which there are five brothers and one sister still living. His father and mother, five brothers and one sister having preceded him to the land beyond. In his younger days the most of his life was spent at the place of his birth and at Covington. When the call came for him to give his service to his country he was one of the first to render, enlisting in the first of the year 1861 in Company I, 61st Ohio Volunteer Infantry as first sergeant, which rank he retained during his soldier life. He was veteranized in 1864. He was wounded at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, where he was sent back home on a sick furlough. During this time his company was mustered out of service. He had then served his county lacking three days of four years. In the year 1865 Mr. Minton was united in marriage with Catharine Rench. To this union were born seven children, four sons and three daughters, all of whom survive him. For the last few years Mr. Minton had been failing in health and during these years of suffering he stayed at the Ohio Military Home, where he was frequently visited by his sons, daughters, and brothers. Through all his sickness he bore his trials patiently, being ever cheerful, even unto the last. He departed this life, November 15th 1913, aged 72 years 6 months, and five days. There remain to mourn his departure; his five brothers; his seven children, Charles E. Minton of Pleasant Hill, Mrs. John Swartz of Covington, James R. Minton of Dayton, Joseph Minton of Pleasant Hill, Mrs. H. C. McCrossing of Covington, Mrs. A. S. Cain of Richmond, Indiana, W. H. Minton of Wapakoneta; ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many comrades, veterans and friends. The funeral was held on Monday, November 17th at the home of his son Joseph Minton of this place, Rev. O. P. Furnas officiating. Burial at this place.
